SXM Festival is fast approaching: from March 11-15 white sand beaches, lush green-blue seas and tropical jungle all become your own musical playground.
More than 30 names play in all, there is a wealth of local art, culture and cuisine to explore and a wide rang of party locations from in the jungle, the beach, pool parties, sunrise and sunset parties.
Before the event, we look at five of the most essential acts to catch
1. Sonja Moonear
Swiss artist Sonja Moonear is first and foremost a DJ, which bodes well for you if you are heading to SXM. Her sound is couched in minimalism; slick, stripped back house and techno that is masterfully lean yet also compelling. Her sets are always hugely rhythmic and seductive affairs whether operating at the moody or more vibrant end of the spectrum. Zip is a fan, which tells you all you need to know, if you didn’t already.
2. Marco Carola
Marco Carola is a techno titan who has risen to the very top of the pile with his paired back and loopy sound. His Music On is the iconic weekly party Neapolitan star Carola hosts every week in Ibiza and has since 2012. Expect the same next level techno experience that Carola serves up all around the world at this paradise like locaiton.
Tel Aviv producer Chaim is an artist who loves enchanting house music. He has released it on labels like BPitch Control and Rumours, Visionquest and Supplemental Facts, as well as recently on Moscoman’s Disco Halal. He is is expert at real atmosphere and grooves with an exotic feel, shivering vocals and tense drums that are curious and deep and really keep you engaged. In this warm environment it will be fascinating to hear him at work.
A lot of Romanian techno has grandiose neo-classical influences, which results in music infused with real instrumentation and orchestration. One of the key protagonists of that is Raresh: tracks of his are often overlaid with drunken cello sounds and symphonic synths that ooze soothing musicality. Essential.
