Esteemed Chicago pioneer Derrick Carter shared his thoughts on current scene.
Veteran DJ and producer posted series of Tweets that we all should think about. What does it really mean to be a DJ?
”The semi-wounded boys club of modern DJ culture is uninteresting. It’s analogous to sitting at the cool table and I always hung with the freaks, weirdos, and interesting thinkers… I’d rather do almost any-fucking-thing else than be at the club playing the role of hits bitch. I’ll go see my friends and allies though. Mostly because that has little to do with music.”
”Not my need to be seen or associated with a label, artist, or concept. Y’all can keep that thin shit. I want to laugh, enjoy and inspire myself while watching the deposed sense of importance and false pedigree, wither from atrophy.”
”Be an honest soul. That’s what we are, souls. Those need sustenance and a balanced diet. As some of you may have noticed, souls won’t thrive on junk food. I really hope that today everyone finds something to carry them through to tomorrow. Something real.”

This is probably why I don’t trend well or play hits. I don’t listen to DJ mixes during my down time, and I’m not interested in chart positions. I will probably never have an avatar of me “on the decks” unless it speaks to something else in me. https://t.co/nlTGf8RIUn

So, unlike other folks I know, I’m just not a (House) music obsessed ex-jock, using being a DJ/producer to supplant old dreams of being something else.
I have a private relationship with sounds I enjoy and have managed to end up in a place where I get to share that with people.— Derrick Carter (@blucu) February 15, 2018

Apart from sharing my “toys” w/others in safe spaces, I’d rather do ALMOST ANY-FUCKING-THING ELSE than be at the club playing the role of hits bitch.

It’s love that booked an Uber.— Derrick Carter (@blucu) February 15, 2018
